Frequently Asked Questions

  • Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing and encapsulating the placenta into supplement or tincture form for consumption by the birthing person after childbirth. It's believed to offer various benefits, including hormone regulation, increased energy levels, and postpartum recovery support.

  • Advocates of placenta encapsulation claim that it can help mitigate postpartum symptoms such as fatigue, mood swings, and postpartum depression. It's also believed to support lactation and hormone balance, although scientific evidence for these benefits is limited.

  • Placenta encapsulation typically involves a multi-step process that includes cleaning, steaming, dehydrating, grinding, and encapsulating the placenta into pill form.

  • While placenta encapsulation is generally considered safe when performed by trained professionals such as Balanced Birth doulas, using proper sanitation methods, it's important to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider or doula before deciding to consume placenta capsules. Additionally, individuals with certain medical conditions or infections may not be suitable candidates for placenta encapsulation.

  • It's recommended to arrange for placenta encapsulation services in advance of your due date to ensure availability and timely processing.

  • The placenta encapsulation process typically takes between 3-4 days from the time the placenta is collected to when the encapsulated pills are ready for consumption. However, this timeframe may vary depending on the Balanced Birth doula’s schedule and workload.

  • Yes, it's possible to encapsulate your placenta after a hospital birth. Alert your nursing staff in advance to ensure the correct release forms and proper handling of the placenta is done. Some hospitals have specific procedures or requirements for placenta release, so be sure to clarify these details early in the labor process.

  • Placenta capsules should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It's recommended to keep them in an airtight container to maintain freshness and potency. Some people like to store capsules in the freezer for longevity. Follow any additional storage instructions provided by your doula.

  • While many individuals report positive experiences with placenta encapsulation, be aware that scientific evidence supporting its benefits is limited, and individual responses may vary. Some individuals may experience side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort or hormonal imbalance.

  • When seeking a placenta encapsulation specialist, look for someone who is trained, experienced, and follows safety and sanitation protocols. Ask for recommendations from trusted sources, such as your childbirth educator, childbirth community, or local doula network.

Doula massaging client at home during pregnancy

“Balanced Birth Doula Agency (BBDA) and Alex was the best decision I could have made for myself and the birth of my daughter. She helped with random what if questions during pregnancy, our birth plan and now with postpartum. She was on this pregnancy journey just as my husband and I were and I truly felt it, every high or low moment she was there. As a first time mom, you can only read or ask around for “what to expect” so much. She is definitely more than just a doula, she gave me the calm feeling that I didn’t know I needed during my pregnancy and labor and took away all unknown fears from my husband and I. Postpartum I was also having trouble with having the baby latch, she sent Emma, another doula with BBDA, to my home 7 days PP and she was amazing and very knowledgeable. Alex with BBDA exceeded my expectations in more ways that I could have ever imagined so I’d say if you “think” you need support (mental, physical and emotional) call Balanced Birth Doula Agency because they will be with you every step of the way like they were with me.
Thank you Balanced Birth Doula Agency and Alex!!!”

frequently Asked Questions

  • A night nurse is helpful in situations where medical support is needed to help care for your infant or yourself in the postpartum weeks. A postpartum doula is supportive of non-medical needs including meal prep, sleep training, lactation support, sibling care, caring for the postpartum person, etc.

  • Yes! We strongly recommend hiring a postpartum doula for the first several weeks postpartum after a cesarean birth. A c-section is a major surgery and while our society has normalized surgical birth, there are a host of needs that require special support in the first several weeks post-op. Our doulas have a well-rounded approach to supporting c-section births that includes assisting with postpartum birth needs AND post-op healing needs.

  • If you have a specific doula that you would like to hire then hire them as soon as possible to guarantee time on their calendar - even if you haven’t had your baby yet. Our schedules stay flexible for postpartum clients because we know that the timing of your birth is unpredictable along with when you will get home and start needing postpartum doula support. If you have had your baby already and are finding that you need extra help, we are more than happy to jump in as needed!

  • Yes. You will have a primary doula assigned to you for the entirety of your contract. There may be days that a backup doula is required and those scheduling needs will be discussed with you as they arise.
